Experiment
The spiders in the vivariums were used to conduct an experiment. The
students were asked to observe the behavior of the spiders in the vivariums
for a week.
Question
Do spiders eat only insects?
Hypothesis
We believe that spiders only eat insects.
Observations
The eating habits of the vivarium spiders were observed for a week on a
daily basis. The students paid attention to what the spiders would or
would not eat. The students charted their observations on a log. Some of
the things that were fed to the spiders are dead bugs, ants and crickets.
The spiders in our observation were:
- Black widows
- Crab spiders
- Banana spiders
- Garden spiders
- House spiders
We found out that spiders not only eat insects, they also eat other
animals. This includes other spiders, birds and mice.
Conclusion
What we observed disproves our hypothesis.
What We Learned About Spiders
- Spiders are arachnids.
- Their bodies are in two parts, the head and the abdomen.
- They do not have feelers.
- Most spiders have eight eyes, but some have six, four or two.
- Many spiders trap their food in webs.
- Not all spiders make webs.
- Some spiders dig homes under the ground.
- Some spiders have claws at the end of each leg.
- Spiders live in all sorts of environments. Some live under water.
