Upper level students who have participated in the BioDECIDE program were eligible for placement in a six-week paid summer internship at a University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine research facility. The internship provided them with field experience that helped them make informed choices for college, while at the same time made them more eligible candidates when they apply to colleges.
Students interested in applying for an internship attended a preparatory seminar at the Museum at which the UM Assistant Director for the Office of Professional Development & Career Guidance reviewed the application process, provided guidance on preparation of research-oriented resumes, and reviewed successful interviewing strategies by participating in mock interviews. At the seminar, students also heard directly from UM undergraduates or Upward Bound alumni who had worked as research interns.
Prospective interns were interviewed by the department chairperson or head of the lab in which they would be working, prior to being assigned to a research associate, graduate student, or other mentor for training. In all of the placements, students were trained in research methods or medical protocols. Upon completion of the six-week internship, students presented a final report documenting their experiences and achievements.
