Upper level students who have participated in the BioDECIDE program are be eligible for placement in a six-week paid summer internship at a University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine research facility. The internship provides them with field experience that will help them make informed choices for college, while at the same time make them more eligible candidates when they apply to colleges. Students interested in applying for an internship attend a preparatory seminar at the Museum at which the UM Assistant Director for the Office of Professional Development & Career Guidance reviews the application process, provides guidance on preparation of research-oriented resumes, and reviews successful interviewing strategies by participating in mock interviews. At the seminar, students will also hear directly from UM undergraduates or Upward Bound alumni who have worked as research interns.
Prospective interns are interviewed by the department chairperson or head of the lab in which they will be working, prior to being assigned to a research associate, graduate student, or other mentor for training. In all of the placements, students are trained in research methods or medical protocols. Upon completion of the six-week internship, students present a final report documenting their experiences and achievements.
