Charlyne interned with Dr.
James Potter, Chairman of the Molecular
and Cellular Pharmacology Department at the University of
Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Potter studies Ca2+ Regulation
of Muscle Contraction. Charlynes research centered on the
role of the proteins involved in muscle contraction. The purpose
of the research is to discover many additional proteins involved
in muscle contraction, by looking for specific similarities between
different types of proteins.

Charlyne and her supervisor Carlos,
describe some of their lab equipment.
Charlyne discusses the different behaviors of cardiac muscles
fibers when immersed in different solutions.
Here, Charlyne prepares protein samples from cardiac muscle fibers for later analysis, under the watchful eye of her supervisor Carlos.
Watch as Charlyne separates cardiac muscle fibers under the microscope. She must acquire one single fiber from a bundle of entangled fibers, in preparation for an upcoming experiment. It is much harder than it looks!
Charlyne prepares protein samples for spectroscopy. She then performs spectroscopy on those samples.(Part 1)
