Santiana interned with
Dr. Norma Kenyon. She
is currently the Director of Pre-Clinical Research and Associate
Director of the Cell Transplant Center at the Diabetes
Research Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Kenyon's specialty is transplant immunology. Much of Dr. Kenyon's
current efforts in transplant immunology are directed towards:
1) developing new ways of separating different types of cells
that are found in bone marrow 2) identifying which ones help and/or
hinder the rejection process and 3) translating these research
findings into new therapies for use in diabetic patients. Santianas
portion of the research addresses the treatment of Type I diabetes
through islet cell transplantation.
