Over 100 students and their families gathered on Saturday to celebrate the beginning of Upward Bound’s 2011 academic year. And how better to celebrate than at a barbeque on the beach?
Upward Bound was started by the US Department of Education to help first-generation college-bound high school students prepare for college, and graduate with degrees in science, technology, and math related fields. To accomplish this, students, parents, mentors and other Museum staff all have to be committed to that big goal. At the beach barbeque, parents were able to meet other parents as well as other students, and mentors had a chance to meet and talk to students as well as their parents. Of course, add fruit, hot dogs, burgers, snacks, and music to the mix, and it adds up to a great start to the Upward Bound year!
