The Florida Information Resource Network
The Florida Information Resource Network (FIRN) is an extensive
network which electronically links all of Florida's public
education entities to computing resources which serve public
education. FIRN's primary mission is to provide electronic
pathways and procedures enabling user access to
computing services for Florida's public educational community.
FIRN Services
FIRN offers a variety of network services to the public sector
educational community. These include:
Dialup access to resources available on the FIRN network,
including the FIRNMAIL E-Mail system, library user information
systems (LUIS, LINCC, State Library), and administrative and
instructional computers and networks at Florida's universities,
colleges and K12 districts. FIRN currently has 275 dialup lines
in 37 locations around Florida.
FIRNMAIL is primarily an
E-Mail service, allowing FIRNMAIL users to exchange E-Mail with
each other and with users of other E-Mail systems on the Internet.
Other services incorporated into FIRNMAIL include Group
Conferencing and the FIRN Internet Menu, as well as a Gopher
client allowing FIRNMAIL users to access the FIRN Gopher server.
The FIRN Gopher
(gopher.firn.edu) is a Gopher server oriented primarily
toward the Florida K12 instructional community.
For Florida educational and public sector organizations
wishing to connect their networks to the Internet, FIRN and
SURAnet (Southeastern Universities Research Association network)
have provided connection points in every major telephone market
area of the state, thereby minimizing (in many cases eliminating)
long distance charges associated with establishing a high speed
connection to the Internet.

Resources Outside of FIRN
Because many information resources reside on computers outside of
this WWW Server, you will occasionally receive a message that a
connection to a remote host has been refused, or you may find
out-of-date information. If you are refused connection, try again
later - the server at the other site may be overloaded at
that time. If you find out-of-date information and there is an
e-mail address available in the file, feel free to notify the data
provider. FIRN will try to insure that information on its WWW
server is up-to-date.
