Internet Relay Chat
IRC
Description
If you fancy a real time, real life, chat, try the Net version of Citizens' Band radio, Internet Relay Chat. IRC, as it's known to all was invented by a Finnish gentleman called Jarkko Oikarinen. It enables you to talk to other Internet users in real time, regardless of where they may be situated. This means you can easily hold a conversation with a group of people scattered across the planet as if you were all in the same room, either vocally or digitally. IRC has had its moments - last year hundreds of Internet users listened in to live reports of the Russian coup against Boris Yeltsin, for instance, and during the Gulf War we were treated to accounts of what was happening in Iraq, as it was happening.
