The Internet is a worldwide information resource. The Internet is not owned by any one organization or government party, however it was before. Internet resources are vast and complicated. No one person could possibly understand all of the Internet. And even so, if the people who knew the most about the Internet compiled their knowledge, all aspects of the Internet still would not be explained, because of its vast size.
It would be a mistake to think of the Internet as just a computer network, or even a group of networks connected to one another. These computer networks are simply a medium that carries the information supplied by the Internet. However, the beauty and utility of the Internet lies in the information itself.
But this is only the beginning. The Internet has now become a people-oriented society. Put simply, the Internet allows millions of people all over the world to communicate and to share information. You can communicate by sending and receiving electronic mail, establishing a connection to someone else's computer and typing messages back and forth (chatting), or through many of the Internet's other mediums of information exchange.
Sooner or later the Internet will become as important to you as your telephone and post office are to you now. Therefore, the Internet is much more than a computer network or an information resource.
