Atmosphere
Breathing Room
|
Take a breath! You've got a piece of the atmosphere in
your lungs. We breathe about 20 times a minute. Our lives and
the lives of most living things depend on the atmosphere that
encircles the earth.
Our atmosphere is just the right pressure and makeup for supporting
life. Nitrogen gas accounts for most of the air. One-fifth of
the air is oxygen, upon which all life depends. There is a small
amount of carbon dioxide (0.03%).
Changes in the amount of carbon dioxide and several other
gases can affect the temperature of the planet's surface. Vehicles,
factories, and volcanoes are some of the major producers of carbon
dioxide. An increase in these gases might one day lead to global
warming.
The following environmental educational activities were developed
by students participating in the museum's UniTY
