Hello, and welcome to our Florida Bay Resource. Here you will find information about Florida Bay and different aspects of the South Florida Water Management District Program (SFWM). The SFWMD program began as a proposal submitted by the Miami Museum of Science to get minority students involved in ongoing research dealing with the blood serum chemistry analysis of bald eagle and osprey nestlings and the demographics of the diamondback terrapin in Florida Bay. The students would assist biologists, Brian Mealey, research director and Greta Parks, coordinator of the wildlife outreach programs, during their field outings.
Twenty one students participated in the first phase of the project during the school year. Then in the summer, eight of the original twenty-one students were selected to take an in-depth part in the research. After the collection of the field samples the students learned to input computer data, develop a web page and also participate in the serum analysis at the museum's laboratory. The SFWMD program has allowed the students to work side by side with field biologist gaining a unique hands-on research experience.
