On Saturday, April 20, 2013, the Miami Science Museum will be hosting Miami Eats: The Art and Science of Food, a food festival dedicated to how Miami grows, cooks, and enjoys food. The event is partly inspired by the permanent exhibitions dedicated to health, food and nutrition that will be a part of the new Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science under construction at Museum Park. The schedule will feature unique food exhibits, fun cooking demos with delicious tastings and special cooking classes that will enhance participants’ understanding of the science behind food while also stimulating their taste buds!Miami Eats will have several activities for the entire family to enjoy including:

• Cooking demos/tastings from former Top Chef celebrity Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli of Miami’s acclaimed Eating House, student chefs of the Miami Culinary Institute, and Whole Foods
• Cooking classes sponsored by Common Threads and Chef Kat Duran
• DIY hydroponics class hosted by Hydrofarm, which will also be raffling off a hydroponic kit to two lucky winners
• Design your own “healthy” plate hosted by the Ceramic League of Miami
• Oh Honey, Bee Hive presentation all about bees with a special honey tasting from Beekeeper Inese Bunch
• Special airing of “Fish Meat” film about sustainable fisheries by Fish Navy Films
• Fruit and Veggie Painting Lesson with Artist Donna Torres
• Learn the history behind the Vizcaya Estate Farm Village. James Deering, owner of the estate, created a picturesque farm on the land where the museum sits today that produced vegetables and herbs for the kitchens.
• Make your own nitrogen ice cream courtesy of Florida International University Chaplin School of Hospitality &Tourism Management.
• Enjoy a cultural experience with a Tea Ceremony and Yummy Chun Buns Tasting by Susan Lee Chun.
• Fun with food chemistry demonstrations on sugars, fats and all that (it might surprise you) with Miami Science Museum and partners.
• Select tables and booths showcasing nutrition and healthy eating with the University of Miami’s Nutrigardens and Eat Well Foods.

Admission is buy one ticket; get one free with a donation of 2 nonperishable cans of food. Regular admission is $14.95 for adults ($12.70 for Miami-Dade County residents); and $10.95 for seniors (62+), children (ages 3 – 12), and students with an I.D. ($9.30 for children, students and seniors who are Miami-Dade County residents). Limit 2 free admissions per family/transaction.  Food donations benefit Farm Share and Chapman Partnership.

Miami Science Museum hosts the 2nd annual Miami Underwater Festival, in partnership with the Festival Mondial de l’Image Sous-Marine (World Festival of Underwater Images), from France. A selection of prize-winning films from the 39th year of this festival will be screened. The films are in French or English.

Other exciting activities will include:

Miami Science Museum and MiaSci Moms present Moms Rock @ MiaSci, Saturday, May12th. Dedicate your weekend of celebrating the special moms in your life, by kicking it off with us. The day will feature a medley of kid activities, mommy and me activities, Quick-Fix workshops for moms by moms as well as raffles and giveaways. Miami Science Museum’s Young Patrons is a thriving group of young professionals with the mission of positioning the Museum at the forefront of cultural institutions in Miami amongst other local young professionals. The group supports educational activities such as fundraising for youth programming, serve as direct mentors to the Museum’s teen Upward Bound/Impact programs as well as help convey the Museum’s mission personally in the community and through social media. Through a series of hosted of events, based in and out of the Museum, the Young Patrons have positioned themselves and their mission prominently in the Miami community. The centerpiece of the Young Patron Season is the annual BIG BANG Gala After Party, a fundraiser for the Museum and its new Museum project, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, scheduled to open in Downtown Miami beginning of 2015.

“Where the Land Meets the Sea” Showcase

Join a guided tour of photographer Barry Fellman’s new installation: Mangrove Coast and enjoy a different perspective of the mangrove habitat, one of South Florida’s most vibrant and vital ecosystems. Then, hear from journalist and photographer Kennedy Warne, author of the new book Let Them Eat Shrimp, and learn about the threats to mangroves worldwide.

Learn more about competing uses for mangrove habitat ranging from coastal development to shrimp aquaculture, listen to opposing points of view, then weigh in with your own opinion at our first-ever Penny Party, an opportunity for you to put in your own two cents.

Also, get a preview of the latest architectural renderings of our new Miami Science Museum in downtown Museum Park, where we’ll be exploring these kinds of environmental issues on a larger scale, and end with a guided tour of our recently opened Sea Lab, where the Museum is prototyping exhibits and growing live corals and mangroves for the aquatic exhibits in our new Museum.
