Miami Science Museum hosts the 2nd annual Miami Underwater Festival, in partnership with the Festival Mondial de l’Image Sous-Marine (World Festival of Underwater Images), from France. A selection of prize-winning films from the 39th year of this festival will be screened. The films are in French or English.

Other exciting activities will include:

• A special airing of a “Fish Meat: Choose Your Farm Wisely” and Q&A with Ted Caplow of Fish Navy Films
•  New frontiers with aquaculture with Julian Sprung of Two Littles Fishies
• Chef Alan McLennan with a lionfish tasting at “STREET” Food Truck
• Shark expert Dr. Mike Heithaus of FIU
• Special airings of WPBT2’s Changing Seas series with special guests
• What to see when diving in South Florida with Jason Bacon and Nick Morrell of Reef Guard
• Tales of the Sea – Story time with Vinora of Miami-Dade Public Library
• Lionfish expert Lisa Krimsky of Sea Grant
• The Urban Corals of Miami with Colin Foord of Coral Morphologic
• Coral aquariums, RSMAS Underwater Photography Contest Winners Gallery, selections from the museum’s collection

On Saturday morning as part of French Week and in collaboration with the General Consulate of France in Miami and partners, we will have a French Breakfast that will showcase family focused French language films.  RSVP is requested.

Miami Science Museum and MiaSci Moms present Moms Rock @ MiaSci, Saturday, May12th. Dedicate your weekend of celebrating the special moms in your life, by kicking it off with us. The day will feature a medley of kid activities, mommy and me activities, Quick-Fix workshops for moms by moms as well as raffles and giveaways. Science Park will be transformed into a special dining area with food trucks on site. Moms will receive free entry on both Saturday, May 12th and Sunday, May 13th with a paid child’s admission.

Activities will include:

Mom’s Quick Fix Guide: The MiaSci Moms have put together some simple solutions to problems you might’ve thought were unsolvable. This guide will guarantee to not only help clean up the worst of messes, but also make your coffee taste better.

Mom, Your Time is Important: Take it Back: Time is similar to energy in that it is limited. You get only 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Once you’ve used a moment, it is gone forever. Miami Science Museum’s Young Patrons is a thriving group of young professionals with the mission of positioning the Museum at the forefront of cultural institutions in Miami amongst other local young professionals. The group supports educational activities such as fundraising for youth programming, serve as direct mentors to the Museum’s teen Upward Bound/Impact programs as well as help convey the Museum’s mission personally in the community and through social media. Through a series of hosted of events, based in and out of the Museum, the Young Patrons have positioned themselves and their mission prominently in the Miami community. The centerpiece of the Young Patron Season is the annual BIG BANG Gala After Party, a fundraiser for the Museum and its new Museum project, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, scheduled to open in Downtown Miami beginning of 2015.

Teams will face-off in a series of energy-based challenges throughout the Museum’s Energy Tracker Exhibit along with creating a “green” structure out of our recycled junk! The top two teams will then face off in an Environmental Brain Challenge!

Celebrate ART BASEL:

“Where the Land Meets the Sea” Showcase

Join a guided tour of photographer Barry Fellman’s new installation: Mangrove Coast and enjoy a different perspective of the mangrove habitat, one of South Florida’s most vibrant and vital ecosystems. Then, hear from journalist and photographer Kennedy Warne, author of the new book Let Them Eat Shrimp, and learn about the threats to mangroves worldwide.

Learn more about competing uses for mangrove habitat ranging from coastal development to shrimp aquaculture, listen to opposing points of view, then weigh in with your own opinion at our first-ever Penny Party, an opportunity for you to put in your own two cents.

Also, get a preview of the latest architectural renderings of our new Miami Science Museum in downtown Museum Park, where we’ll be exploring these kinds of environmental issues on a larger scale, and end with a guided tour of our recently opened Sea Lab, where the Museum is prototyping exhibits and growing live corals and mangroves for the aquatic exhibits in our new Museum.
