The Miami Museum of Science Makes A Touchdown With Football: A Hands-On Exhibit
Americas Favorite Sport Teaches Science, Mathematics and Technology
Attention all armchair quarterbacks: you might not realize it, but watching a football game is exposing you to some serious physics! Thats right, from the flight of the ball to the cheerleaders on the sidelines, the principles of science, mathematics and technology dominate the game and are the inspiration for the Miami Museum of Sciences Football: A Hands-On Exhibit, which opens Saturday, September 28th and runs through January 5, 2003.
Science is everywhere and our goal is to spark interest and intrigue in the world around us, said Louise Valdes-Fauli, Miami Museum of Science, Board of Trustees Chair. The concept of gyroscopic stability might sound difficult, but when you see a football spiraling through the air, the connection is easily made. This interactive exhibit is a wonderful medium to demonstrate some of the most important laws of science and math to all ages.
Organized into zones that relate directly to the game, the exhibit encourages hands-on participation from the moment you step on the astro-turf. Take a turn in the passing cage and experience aerodynamics in action. Test your strength against a lineman with the Grip tester and your running speed alongside a turtle or a cheetah on the Sprint Track. The Kicking Game demonstrates trajectory and cheerleaders explain rotational inertia, angular momentum and balance. Wind down with the history of the game and try on helmets and pads.
Football: A Hands-on Exhibit is free with paid admission to the Museum of Science & Space Transit Planetarium, which is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62+) and students with ID (ages 13-18), $6 for children 3 to 12, children under 3 are free.
Football: A Hands-on Exhibit was designed by The Museum of Discovery in Little Rock, Arkansas. Major corporate support for the exhibits Miami visit is provided by Carnival Cruise Lines. The Museum, founded in 1949, is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. The Museum was recently named recipient of the National Award for Museum Service by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, only one of three Museums in the country selected for this prestigious distinction.
Major operating support for the Museum and Planetarium is received from Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council; the Institute of Museum and Library Services; and the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Arts Council.
