All About Me
My name is Olivia. I was born here in Miami. Some of my hobbies include dancing and cheering. I am going into the 8th garde. I attend Northwest Christian Academy. I have a younger sister who is six. My future career is to be either a chemist or a pro dancer. The reason I entered this program, (Girls RISE), is because I like science. I never really thought of engineering as a field of study, but now I might consider it.
About RISE
Girls RISE is a program for girls who are interested in science and engineering. RISE stands for Raising Interest in Science and Engineering. This program requires a lot of work. If you want to be in the RISE program, you have to have self-esteem and you need to be respectful to others . There isn't any project that we are working on that we did not do as a team. This is a pretty neat program. There are four groups Delta { my group}, Beta , Psi, and Alpha. Gaby, Wendie, Janice, Zaily, and Phong are the mentors for each of these groups respectively. They are pretty cool. They are great mentors. I hope I come back for the next session.
RISE Activities
We are working on building an electric car. We also had to build a line tracker. The car was kind of easy to build when we were just testing to see whose car we were going to use. I guess thats because we didn't have to worry about the frame or speed or going up a ramp. It is a challenge deciding what you want your frame to be made out of. We first tried Bulsa Wood . That did not work at all . So now we are working with pipe cleaners. They seem to be working O.K. We probobly need to use longer pipe cleaners. We also built a line tracker. That was pretty easy because it came with instructions. There were many small parts. We thought that the tracker was malfunctioning because one half of the base was not turning. But that was the way it was meant to be. These challenges are kind of lessons.
