How Can I Build Structures in the Sand?

Place the RISE girls into cooperative groups of two or three. Have the girls work together to share the responsibilities of designing and building their sand structures.

1. Tell the girls that they are going to create their own sand structures.

2. Provide research on various sand sculpting techniques. ( One leader had a copy of the book Sand Castles by Lucinda Wierenga and Walter McDonald and this was provided for use to the girls. This book is out of print, but can still be found in some book stores. It is an excellent book on basic sand building techniques. The authors do have a web site that provides some very basic information about building in the sand. Sandcastling Tips for Beginners. )

3. On Florida sand it is difficult to build tall structures without the use of supports. Also the sand must constantly be kept moist. But for a first time attempt, the RISE girls rose to the occasion. See what some of the girls created.
