GIRL'S R.I.S.E!!!!

Amanda's Homepage

Hello everyone! My name is Amanda Lopez and I am a participant in the Girl's R.I.S.E. Program (Raising Interest in Science and Engineering). I attend Southwood Middle School, and I will be in the eighth grade in the fall. My favorite subjects at school are Math and Science. This is probably why I joined the R.I.S.E. Program.

R.I.S.E.

Here at R.I.S.E. we do interesting, hands-on projects like building electrical cars, robots that follow a dark line on the floor, burglar alarms, clocks, games, and computer stuff like this webpage. We are going are starting to build electrical cars, which we will race in a competition against the other three teams (The teams are Alpha, Beta, Psi, and Delta; we are Beta). Here in R.I.S.E. we find the to questions like: "How will we make our car go fastest, carry a lot of weight, and be able to travel up a slope at the same time? The competition will be on Saturday the 16th of August, in the morning at the Museum of Science. Sometimes, we go on exciting field trips!!

like to University of Miami and talk with women engineers, or they come here to the Museum of Science; they tell us about their jobs, what it's like to be an engineer, and what engineers do. They are very nice and fun to talk to. We also took a field trip to a Johnson & Johnson management plant called "Cordis." We took a tour around a factory part of the plant which made long rod-like tubes called catheters. It was all very interesting and not all of us got to go, so I felt very lucky. The R.I.S.E. Program is a lot of fun and it's very interesting.

ME

On my spare time, here at R.I.S.E. I really enjoy going to web sites with comics, like Calvin & Hobbes, Garfield, Cathy, Foxtrot, and lots of other amusing cartoons. I ! He's so funny.

I also have a lot of fun going to a Gap web site where you can create lots of different hair styles and clothes styles, and then you can see how they look on a model.
