Have you ever felt the ground move under your feet? That's what it feels like to be in an earthquake. In fact, it feels much like being in a boat. The vibrations may last only a few seconds or several minutes. During the shaking, many tall buildings move back and forth. Trees sway and roads may buckle.

The earth's shaking sometimes causes landslides. Fires resulting from an earthquake can cause even more damage. All of this can cause terrible destruction, but the damage to lives and property would not be so bad if people knew when one was coming. Buildings might be destroyed, but lives could be saved. Unfortunately, at this time, we can't predict earthquakes with any accuracy yet.
Read an earthquake story from a 5th Grader, or a story from Harvey K. Y. Cheung in Hong Kong.
