Jane Moore, Evanston, IL

I grew up and lived in New Orleans, Louisiana for the first 41 years of my life. During that time, we experienced many hurricanes, but the one that stands out for me was Betsy. Betsy arrived during the fall of my freshman year of college. As a high school graduation present, my mom had redecorated my bedroom, on the second floor of our turn of the century house. I had a beautiful canopy bed, white organdy curtains--it was a dream room for me.

During the storm, we all stayed on the bottom floor. We could hear the wind howling and branches scraping the windows. At some point, the power went out. We heard lots of loud noises throughout the night. When the storm was over we went upstairs. I remember that my beautiful canopy held the bulk of the ceiling! It was still raining inside my room.

We were far more fortunate than residents to the east of us--our power was restored in two days!

Now that I live in the Midwest, I always tell people how much I respect the power of hurricanes.
