Toto, I've A Feeling We're Not in Miami Anymore

by Vita Maria Lovett

Cotton, hand painted, photo transfer, debris found in yard, machine quilted.

As the radio announced that our area was part of an evacuation zone, we rushed to secure what we could, not knowing that we would return home to a nightmare. When we "found" our street, we literally could look completely through our home--and we were lucky--other areas were hit much harder. "Toto, I've a Felling We're not in Miami Anymore" is a photo documentary of Hurricane Andrew's destruction whirling against a background of broken fabric roof trusses and window frames. The red death cards represent the loss of all vegetation. I have attached various debris found in my yard--parts of my roof (along with everyone else's), cable, wire, our screen enclosure, the Red Cross sign from down the street and autographs form our WTVJ-Channel 4 Weatherman Brian Norcross and entertainer Gloria Estéfan, who raised approximately $2.3 million for Hurricane Relief. This piece is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend, Jackie Parker Koger, who lost her life as a result of the storm.
