The Day God Looked Away

by Judith L. Geiger

Mixed media on mixed fabrics with found objects, machine pieced, hand embellished.

"The Day God Looked Away" is the story of one family's fight for survival while Hurricane Andrew beat at their door and ravaged their neighborhood. The quilt is an expression of their descriptions of the rage of Andrew and my own personal rage that such awful things could happen to such wonderful people. It is constructed of overydyed cotton (which I finally buried in the mud for 3 days to "ripen") and torn, hand-painted silk (which represents the fabric of the universe). The embellishments represent the minutia of their daily lives being flung away by the fury of the storm and the fears that now poked out from the storm-created holes.
