En 1979, yo tenía 14 años de edad, fué el año del Huracán David. Vivía a una cuadra del Mar Caribe, en Santo Domingo, Rep. Dom.; fué el 31 de Agosto de dicho año, cuando este Huracán atacó la isla nuestra isla. El día anterior el oleaje era tremendo, las olas formaban un espectáculo y muchas personas, ignorantes del peligro, fuimos a presenciarlo. Nos encontrábamos en la avenida frente al mar, los carros circulaban normamente, cuando de repente vino una ola enorme que llegó a cubrir la acera donde nos encontrábamos por completo, corrimos y no nos alcanzó, parecía una gran diversión; pero luego vino otra ola más grande y no sólo cubrió la acera sino también media avenida, nos arropó y nos arrastró hasta el otro lado de la calle. Uno de nosotros al llegar al otro lado rodando por el piso chocó su cabeza con una roca provocándole una gran herida y si hubieran estado pasando vehículos en ese momento nuestra suerte hubiera sido peor.
In 1979 I was 14 years old; it was the year of Hurricane David. I lived one block from the Caribbean Sea, in Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep.; it was August 31 of that year, when this Hurricane attacked our island. The day before there had been very rough seas, the waves made a spectacle and many of us, ignorant of the danger, went to see it. We ended up at the avenue across from the sea, car traffic was normal, when all of a sudden an enormous wave completely covered the sidewalk where we were standing, we ran and it didn't reach us, it seemed like a lot of fun; but later another wave, larger than the first, covered not only the sidewalk but half the avenue, we were enveloped and dragged to the other side of the street. One of us hit his head on a rock when he rolled to the other side, causing a large wound and if vehicles had been going by at that moment our luck would have been worse.
