South East Art Quilters

SOUTH EAST ART QUILTERS, known as SEA Q, was started in 1989 as an informal quitique experience for contemporary art quilters. Membership is by invitation only and the eleven current members live in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County, along Florida's southern coast. Bimonthly meetings focus on the artistic elements of quiltmaking rather than techniques or traditional methods. Their discussions provide relief from the relative isolation of the artist's studio and offer encouragement for the individual members' professional advancement.

A main consideration of SEA Q is concern and dedication to educating the international and multi-ethnic communities about art quilts. To emphasize the importance of expressing and opening the minds and hearts of artists to the community. To bring to the public awareness of the healing qualities of self-expression. In accommplishing this purpose SEA Q organizes group exhibitions and speakers, provides traveling exhibitions, lectures and workshops. These artists are creative pioneers willing to test the limits of quilts as an art form, satisfy our individual creativity, and always maintain effective communication locally, regionally and internationally.

Group exhibitions were a natural step for these energetic and innovative art quilters, starting with a small curated exhibition locally, progressing to a three-year national touring exhibit. Members have exhibited on four continents and have been widely published in Fiberarts Design, Contemporary Pictorial Quilts, Great American Quilts, Award Winning Quilts and their Makers books; Quilt National catalog; Fiberarts, American Craft, AIQA Journal, International Quilting, McCall's Quilting magazines; along with various regional magazines and newspapers. Recent exhibitions include the American Museum of Quilts and Textiles in San Jose, CA and the Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah, KY.
