Ted Myers, age 25

I am very glad that I left Miami before Andrew hit. I went to Orlando. When I returned the next day, I found a whole tree in my bedroom roof and the floor flooded under a foot of water. I had lost almost everything. The week after the storm was more annoying more than anything else. I had to drive about 150 miles a day to get gas, food, money, and building supplies for my family. After about a week I gave up and moved into my office at the Museum of Science. I desperately tried to regain a sense of normalcy.

After a few months things got better. We got phones back, the electricity went back on, and the roads were fixed. Houses were rebuilt and neighborhoods were strengthened. Now it's almost four years after the storm and to the untrained eye south Florida looks like it was never hit by Andrew; but those of us who grew up here know better. Lives were lost, and some communities were permanently destroyed. Our hearts will always remember.
