Tornadoes

When a tornado is a few miles away, it sounds like the hum of a trillion bees; but as it approaches, the sound is more like the roar of a hundred freight trains. When the tornado touches down on the ground, its color darkens because of the debris it is sweeping up. The tornado is capable of tearing up houses and taking many lives.

Although tornadoes form in many parts of the world, the United States is affected by many severe ones. About seven hundred tornadoes touch down each year in the US. Tornadoes rank as the nation's second deadliest type of natural disaster.
