Facilitator Guidelines

Internet Island is designed to be a safe environment where novice Internet users can learn and practice navigation skills. At the same time they will experience how Internet can be used to promote inquiry-based learning. Teachers who use this tutorial should know the basics of clicking and dragging a mouse.

QuickTime 2.0
14.4 kbps or better connection to the Internet
color monitor

Cooperative Grouping Suggestions

It is recommended that workshop participants work in pairs. Individual roles and responsibilities are as follows:

Reader. Reads all text out loud.
Equipment Handler. Performs all actions specified in the instructions.

Participants should switch roles half-way through the tutorial, so that everyone gets hands-on experience.

If a large group of participants shares the same Internet connection, download time is significantly reduced. It's better to, divide the group in half. One group with Internet Island, the other with a non-Internet activity. Rotate when each group is finished.

Preparation Details

In order for Internet Island to run successfully in a workshop setting, Netscape should be set up with the following options/settings.

Show Toolbar

PLACE the mouse pointer on the Options menu at the top of the screen.
CLICK and HOLD the mouse button down.
IF Show Toolbar is not checked, as it is in the picture, DRAG the pointer to Show Toolbar and Release the button.

Auto Load Images

PLACE the mouse pointer on the Options menu at the top of the screen.
CLICK and HOLD the mouse button down.
IF Auto Load Images is not checked, as it is in the picture, DRAG the pointer to Auto Load Images and Release the button.

Internet Island runs more smoothly if all pages are downloaded in advance. Before delivering a workshop on the Web, visit all Internet Island pages on each computer you plan to use.
