But in your time, scientists know that microbes c or germs, as you call them - cause the plague and many other diseases.  They also know that not all microbes cause disease.  In fact, most microbes are either harmless or helpful.  They have helped sustain all life on Earth since the beginning of life. And scientists have learned to use microbes to fight diseases and disasters.
