Ancient Egypt: Tuberculosis, Polio and Smallpox
Fossil records and mummified human remains reflect the prevalence of tuberculosis and other diseases caused by microbes in ancient times. Our earliest record of a viral disease is polio. This hieroglyph, dating to about 1500 BC, shows the withered leg of a victim of polio. The mummified remains of the pharaoh Rameses V around 1150 BC show the pockmarked face characteristic of smallpox.
