What is a Microbe?

Microbe is a word that means "small life." Microbes are tiny bits of life, so tiny that most of them are invisible to the naked eye. Different kinds of microbes include bacteria, protozoa, viruses and fungi.

Most people associate microbes with germs, but only 5% of microbes cause diseases. "Good microbes" produce oxygen, fight disease and eliminate toxic substances like human wastes, petroleum and pesticides. And even the }bad microbes that cause disease are not intentionally bad. Microbes, like all life forms on earth, are just trying to survive and reproduce. They dont know they are hurting or helping us.

Microbes are the earliest life forms yet discovered. It may be that we evolved from communities of microbes that originally got together for mutual defense and cooperation.
