Large Numbers and pH
As science drives us to learn the unknown,
understanding large numbers beyond our direct experience is part
of the bargain. Therefore it is very important that we help students
begin to understand and appreciate the large numbers. Here are
some examples of large numbers in science:
Dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years
ago. How many days are in 65 million years? How many seconds
are in 65 million years?
The planet Earth is 111,600,000 kilometers
from the Sun. How many meters are in 111,600,000 kilometers?
How many centimeters are in 111,600,000 kilometers?
Stomach fluids have about 1,000,000 times
as much hydrogen (H+) as pure water. This makes it a very strong
acid
