Distribution: Island of New Guinea and several
of the small surrounding islands, as well as extreme northeastern
Australia.
Size: 4 - 6 ft. (1.2 - 1.8 m) long.
Habitat and Diet: Spends most of its life
in rain forest trees where it lies waiting in a characteristic
flat coiled position for the unsuspecting frogs, lizards, small
mammals and birds that make up its diet. Notice the temperature-sensitive
pits in its lip scales that help it to locate and strike at prey.
They are generally green, as their name implies, but may also
be partially yellow or blue. The blue adults are extremely rare,
and quite prized by breeders. Babies do not look like the adults,
but hatch out yellow, red, or chocolate brown. Between six months
and a year of age, they change to the adult color.
