Distribution: Found from Panama through central
South America. They have also been introduced on several Caribbean
islands.
Size: Males 13 in. (34 cm) and females 11 in. (29 cm) long.
Habitat and Diet: Lives in both forested areas
and savannahs within its range. In the wild, they are primarily
plant eaters, but also consume a small amount of animal matter
such as carrion (animals carcasses). In some countries, the red-footed
tortoise and its yellow-footed cousin (Chelonoidis denticulata),
are both known as "morrocoy."
