Savannah Monitor

Distribution: Central Africa.

Size: 3 - 4 ft. (0.9 - 1.2 m) long.

Diet and Habitat: This lizard can be found in the trees and on the ground in a variety of areas, such as burrows, rock crevices, tree roots and abandoned termite mounds. It eats a wide range of food throughout its dry savannah habitat including insects, snails, snakes, tortoises, birds and bird eggs. It will eat up to one-tenth of its body weight each day during the four month hot/wet season. The excess fat that it stores in its tail and abdomen during this time of plenty comes in handy during the remaining 8 months of scarcity.
