Why is grass green?

Grass is an important kind of plant. Are all plants are green? Can you think of a plant that's not green? What part of the plant is not green? The root? The stems? The leaves? The flowers? What colors do you see? If you find a plant with lots of beautiful colors, draw it. Then name the different parts.

Plants use sunlight to make energy. There are special pigments that help the plants do this. One type of pigment is called chlorophyll, and it's green. There are other types of pigments for other colors (xanthophyll is yellow and beta-carotene is red). Sometimes these colors are mixed together in the same leaf.

Some experiments will help you see all the colors that are mixed together in a plant, or even a marker:
