SCAS President Lester Shalloway, M.D.
Dr. Shallow serves as President of the renowned SOUTHERN CROSS ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Inc. of Miami, Florida. He has served for over 7 years as Presidents of one of the largest amateur clubs in the western hemisphere. Dr. Shalloway joined SCAS in 1982 as did many currently “famous SCAS amateur astronomers”. He quickly developed a talent for recording, photographing, video and imaging solar and celestial events and objects. Lester funded the Sunday morning SCAS Safe Solar viewing Program at MetroZoo in 1986. He recorded, along with several SCAS members, the total 7-minute solar eclipse from La Paz, Baja California in July 1991. For two decades Lester has presented intriguing SCAS lectures at FIU, Miami-Dade College, U.of Miami, MetroZoo, Deering Estate, Zoological Society, Miami Science Museum, Miami Art Museum, schools and scientific organizations.
Through his devotion to view the Sun safely, thousands of adults and youngsters have truly “Expanded Their Horizons” when they catch their first glimpse of the power exploding off the solar surface 93 million miles distant, and his demo of optical sun damage during his programs at the Annual MetroBoo at Halloween, Fairchild Garden Ramble, Sunday Solar-viewing at MetroZoo, ect.
Lester also is compiling a CD version of SCAS history which covers nearly a century. His dedication to the Southern Cross Astronomical Society keeps more than 270 members on an even keel (such as his ‘stamp of approval’ on the recent SCAS ban of green laser pointers) and continues to ‘Bring Astronomy To You’ throughout South Florida with his exciting solar and celestial programs on a level of the highest excellence.
