YOUTH MENTOR (Posted November 6th, 2009)
The Miami Science Museum seeks college student mentors for its Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• High comfort level with teaching hands-on activities to a class of about 15 high school students
• Mentors MUST come prepared to teach – meaning nightly reviewing of activities for next day
• Possibility of continuing as a summer mentor in the Marine Science summer program (June 28, 2010-August 8, 2010, Monday-Friday from 8:30 am–3:30 pm)
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Currently holding or acquiring a B.S. in marine science or a general science
• Creole and Spanish speakers needed, but not necessary
• Teaching and mentoring experience strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
• Ability to provide a positive and fun working environment
• Ability to hold leadership positions and work as a member of a team
• Serve as a mentor/role model to underserved high school youth
• Ability to communicate well with students as well as coordinating staff
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
• UBMS program runs from September 26, 2009-June 5, 2010, Saturdays from 9:00 am–3:30 pm
• Some Saturdays will be spent in the field doing volunteering or experiments
• Possibility of attending overnight camping trips to state parks and marine labs throughout Southern FL
• $14.00 per hour
