Best Buy Teen Tech Center Youth Facilitator (Posted November 19th, 2012)

The Miami Science Museum seeks an individual to assist with an innovative new program called the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, established with the support of the Best Buy Children’s Foundation. The Teen Tech Center offers participants in the Museum’s Upward Bound Math and Science program and youth from underserved communities access to opportunities for open-ended exploration and high-end professional software for creative expression and scientific and technological exploration.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Facilitate youth in project development (e.g., help them come up with ideas, gather materials, get started, locate volunteers to work with them, and support their ongoing work).
• Support youth in planning for the future, including pursuing academic and job opportunities that leverage their skills and experience.
• Provide administrative support for the Center, including keeping records of participants and keeping the Center space organized.
• Participate in The Village online community to share ideas and issues, and participate in collaborative projects across sites participating in the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Proven track record working with youth, in particular young people from underserved neighborhoods;
• Work experience in an informal learning environment;
• Experience with digital media and interest in technology as a creative and empowering tool;
• Demonstrated ability to reach out to youth, parents, educators, and community leaders;
• Interpersonal skills, including an ability to get along with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities and a talent for making people feel welcome and included;
• A passion for learning and helping others to learn;
• B.A./B.S. in related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

This is a part-time position.
