IMPACT Mentor (Posted February 12th, 2013)

EMPLOYMENT HOURS: Up to 35 hours a week (Tentative dates)
One week of training: June 17, 2013 – June 21, 2013
Program is 6 weeks: June 24, 2013 – August 2, 2013
SUMMARY:

We are seeking summer mentors who are problem solvers, team players, and knowledgeable about marine science to serve as role models for high school students, participating in the museum’s Upward Bound Math & Science Center program.

IMPACT Mentors support museum staff in the delivery of hands-on exploratory science activities, and lead off site excursions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Co-delivery of science enrichment activities, swimming, and general academic skills to high school students
• Possess leadership abilities
• Communicate well with students as well as coordinating staff and other mentors
• Provide a positive and fun working environment
• Ensure students’ safety during all activities
• Willingness to work on overnight trips to state parks and marine labs throughout Southern FL
• Serve as a mentor/role model to underserved high school youth
• Come prepared to teach everyday
• Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office

MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Possession of B.S. or in the late stages of acquiring a Bachelor’s of Science degree in marine science or general science; and experience with working with high school youth in a mentoring or teaching role.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Applicants should have experience in teaching, classroom management, physical education, and computing.
• Fluency in Haitian Creole and Spanish is a plus.
• Applicants should be prepared to work in both indoor and outdoor conditions.
• Advocate for the processes of science and inquiry-based teaching methods.
• First Aid and CPR certification is a plus.
• Must possess snorkeling and swimming experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work can be performed in an interior classroom environment and outside with exposure to the elements, some physical effort required, limited exposure to physical risk.
