Restoration & Social Action Coordinator (Posted March 8th, 2013)
SUMMARY: The Restoration and Social Action Coordinator will help develop and will manage the Museum’s portfolio of ecological social action projects including the Museum's ongoing partnership in The Reclamation Project. The coordinator will oversee the implementation of coastal habitat restoration projects, support the recruitment of new volunteers, and maximize volunteer participation. He/she will manage all educational outreach, volunteer coordination and social networking efforts, including the development of videos, blogs, social media presence, and other web-based materials. This position will collaborate with Museum colleagues to fully integrate outdoor learning, citizen science projects, and other ongoing opportunities for active participation into ongoing Museum exhibits and programs.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Restoration
• Coordinate volunteer restoration activities including two major habitat restoration projects at Oleta River State Park and Virginia Key covering over 20 acres. This includes overseeing the contracting process for land clearing and invasive plant removal, purchasing plants and ensuring volunteers are well provisioned.
• Maintain database of volunteers and keep them informed of restoration activities through distribution lists, social media, direct email/phone, etc.
• Oversee groups of “eco-ambassadors” representing local corporations who will be involved in restoration site visits, restoration planning and post-restoration monitoring
• Maintain a log of project updates (photos, journal, testimony) to be included in grant reports.
• Maintain relationships with Museum institutional partners and grantors
• Report project updates on a weekly basis to Curator for Ecology and Field Conservation
Social Action
• Use social media tools, including project website and Facebook page to ensure that constituencies are informed and engaged
• Compose blogs for Museum website
• Capture images and video for incorporation into web-based outreach
• Develop a data base of Reclamation Project stakeholders (including board members, retail store participants, donors, adopt-a-seedling participants, volunteers, partners, schools, funders, environmental and eco-art groups)
• Compose a quarterly newsletter and distribute to stakeholders and broader audience
Outreach:
Liaise with schools and conduct regular visits to ensure that eco-art installations are well maintained. Also ensure the integrity of an eco-art exhibit at Miami Science Museum
• Coordinate outdoor learning experiences with existing museum programs including its Upward Bound Math and Science Program
• Develop content for, and deliver, up to three Environmental Explorers Summer Camp classes every summer.
• Develop new citizen science engagement opportunities linked to current exhibits and planned exhibits and programs for the new Miami Science Museum (scheduled to open in 2015).
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
• Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s degree preferred, in biology, environmental science, or related field
• Experience managing projects to completion and working within budget
• Spanish language skills a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Proficiency in Web Design and publishing programs a plus.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed in support of duties.
• Proficiency in Social Media, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The majority of work is performed in an office setting including time spent working on a computer. The position includes regular components of outdoor field-based restoration work, including the ability to lift and carry materials.
