The Explainer serves as one of the Museums chief communication points with visitors. The Explainer is knowledgeable about the exhibits at all times, and is helpful to visitors while providing excellent customer service.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interacts with visitors to explain the scientific principles demonstrated in current exhibits.
Assists visitors in their use of the exhibits, resources, and activities in the exhibit area.
Answers visitor questions about the exhibits and the Museum, including, but not limited to, the days programs and events
Learns content of the exhibit area and the significance of the science in the exhibit components on display in order to be able to engage visitors in conversations about the exhibit are.
Stays informed of changes in the exhibit and programs
Works cooperatively with members of the Public Programs staff and other volunteers.
Ensures that visitors follow Museum guidelines.
Serves as a Museum ambassador, communicating effectively and appropriately with guests of all ages.
Works to maintain the safety of Museum visitors as well as the integrity of exhibits.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including cross-training in the Theater, obtaining basic Wildlife Handling Certification, and working with other departments as necessary.
MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Background and/or strong interest in science
Bilingual (Spanish or Creole preferred, but other languages, including ASL, welcomed)
Experience working with children
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
A strong sense of responsibility coupled with a "problem solver" attitude
Knowledge of the Museum's basic customer service features
Strong customer service skills
Good communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate science concepts and interpret exhibits
Ability to perform in public
Ability to complete tasks/roles with minimal supervision
Ability and willingness to work with large groups of children, ranging from K-12
Bilingual English/Spanish required; Creole also preferred
Ability to have a flexible schedule as needed, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays. Regular weekend shifts are mandatory. Total hours will range from 20-35 per week.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Work is normally performed in an interior office and gallery environment with occasional exposure to outdoor conditions, using light physical effort, and little exposure to physical risk.
