From MP3s to 'Audio Cosmetics': The Latest and Greatest in Modern Sound Processing

A presentation by Dr. Corey Cheng
Friday, February 6th at 8:00 p.m. in the Museum Space Gallery
Refreshments served

Have you ever wondered how sound compression techniques in MP3 files actually work? Or, would you like to know how “3-D/binaural” audio recordings are made, and why the U.S. Navy would be interested in this technology? Do you have an interest in “audio cosmetics”, such as time stretching and shrinkage, music synthesis, or synthetic stereo?

The technology with which we both make and experience music has changed radically in the past few decades. In this presentation, Dr. Cheng will share with the audience some of the sound processing technologies that have developed in recent years, and how these have evolved from scientific curiosities to multi-million dollar industries with applications both inside and outside of music.

About Dr. Cheng

Corey I. Cheng is Associate Professor and Director of the Music Engineering Technology Program at the University of Miami, and also Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Cheng holds degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, a degree in electro-acoustic music from Dartmouth College, and a Bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvard. He worked in the research division at Dolby Laboratories for six years, and holds U.S. and international patents in perceptual audio coding.
