Music: Nourishment for the Brain

A lecture and performance for adults and children, by Dr. Joy Galliford

Come experience the power of music as Dr. Joy Galliford presents important information on how music is essential to nourish a child's brain, as well as how musical stimulation increases the opportunity for that same child to reach his or her fullest potential. Grown-ups and children will become part of this interactive musical experience as Dr. Galliford involves the audience in the music! Special guest performers will include: Bill Galliford, piano; Alaina Galliford, clarinetist; Ronnie Manning, piano, and one of University of Miami's MusicTime keyboard classes, who will be performing at the Florida Music Educators Conference on January 9th in Tampa, Florida.



About Dr. Galliford

Joy Galliford, Ph.D., is a researcher and associate faculty for the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Her responsibilities include being a researcher, teaching undergraduates, supervising associate teachers as well as administrating and teaching in the University of Miami MusicTime program. Before she began her career at the University of Miami, Joy was a public an private school music teacher for more than 20 years. Dr. Galliford is a presenter at both the national and state conferences in the United States. Joy is known as a master teacher who continues to share her love and passion for music with individuals from infancy to adulthood. She is a faculty member who continues to make history for the University of Miami. In January of 2009, Galliford along with her UM MusicTime beginning keyboard class will be presenting a session at the Florida Music Educator Association Conference in Tampa, Florida. Joy and her group of six-year-old children will be demonstrating the importance of creativity through their love of music.

Joy is also known as a producer and songwriter. More recently, Joy co-authored the curriculum, Experience the Music, which received of one of the Children's Trust Awards of Excellence in 2006. Joy was the first music graduate student to receive the University of Miami Edward Foote, II Award for Excellence in Student Leadership in 2003. She is currently the Consulting Editor of the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association and a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Florida Elementary Music Educators Association National Association for the Education of Young Children, National Federation of Music Clubs and National Guild of Piano Teachers. In December of 2008, Joy was honored by becoming a Distinguished Member of the Sigma Chi Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. Galliford has been featured on several local television programs discussing the merits of early childhood music education. She also continues to host the "Mozart for Children Concert," part of the annual Mainly Mozart Festival Series in Coral Gables, Florida.

Joy also demonstrates her musicianship as she serves as the Director of Music at Kendall United Methodist Church. She is an individual who has continues to dedicate a portion of her time to serve her community here in Miami as well as serve as the team leader for Kendall United Methodist Church yearly mission trips to Port Antonio, Jamaica. Under her leadership, this group of teenagers and adults provide a week-long experience including music, crafts and food to over 500 children. Joy resides in Miami with her husband, Bill, and two teenagers, Alaina and Nathaniel.
