Global Warming and South Florida: What does the future hold?
A talk and public discussion by Dr. Brian J. Soden Friday, February 1st at 8:00 in the Museum Space Gallery
Over the past 50 years, the Earth's climate has warmed by about 1 degree Fahrenheit due to increasing atmospheric concentrations of human-contributed CO2. If we consider a "middle-of-the-road" scenario in the future, the climate is projected to warm by an additional 1.5 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit over the course of the next 50 years.
This MiaSci FYI lecture explores the impact such an increase in temperature would have on weather and climate patterns for future generations, including the connection between global warming and hurricanes, and possible rises in sea level, both of which are extremely relevant to South Florida.
About Dr. Brian Soden
Dr. Brian Soden is Associate Professor of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Dr. Soden specializes in the use of satellite observations to test and improve computer model simulations of climate change. During the past 15 years he has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, primarily focused on the response of the climate system to global warming. He served as a Lead Author of the 2007 report for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Prior to joining RSMAS, Dr. Soden served as a Visiting Scientist and Lecturer at Princeton University, and as a Physical Scientist with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey.
