Chemistry Explorations Spring Camp for Pre-K to 5th Grade Students

Technology Journeys Spring Camp for Middle School Students

Chemistry Explorations Spring Camp: March 24th – 28th 2014
Pre-K (at least 4 years old) - 5th Grade

Camp Classes

Theme:  Chemistry Explorations
Enter our chem lab as we explore all things gooey, sticky, bubbly, fizzy, and fun! During this week of chemistry fun, you'll get a refresher on the states of matter, experiment with various substances, cause some explosive reactions, make things glow, and more!

Monday, March 24th:  What's the pH?
Learn why lemons are sour, water can support life and soaps are used for cleaning. In this class, we will combine different substances to create a rainbow of colors that will help us to identify acids and bases.

Tuesday, March 25th: Nano Chemistry
Help us explore the chemistry that takes place on a nanoscale! That's just a bit larger than an atom! We'll experiment with how nano chemistry can help us create super absorbent materials, turn gold into different colors, protect us from the sun, and power light bulbs.

Wednesday, March 26th:  The Art of Chemistry
Chemistry is a part of everything, but did you know it can help us to create works of art? We'll use chemistry principles to help bring out your artistic side as we design tie-dye pieces, create a crystal star garden, paint frescos, and more.

Thursday, March 27th:  Messy Reactions
Messes are educational too! In this class, you'll learn to create chemical concoctions that will expand, fizz, become sticky, bubble, pop, or even go kaboom!

Friday, March 28th: Food Chemistry
Let's turn your kitchen into our very own chem lab. We'll use common items that you may find in your kitchen cabinets or refrigerator to do our own food experiments. We'll also explore the chemistry behind how we taste delicious (and yucky) foods.

6th - 8th Grade

New for Middle School Students!

Theme:  Technology Journeys
Immerse yourself in the inspiring world of the Museum's Teen Tech Center, where the possibilities of your digital media products are as limitless as your creativity. Use innovative technologies to code, construct and create in ways you probably have not imagined!

Monday, March 24th:  Code with Scratch
Enter the fun and user-friendly coding world of Scratch 2.0. Create your own stories, animations and games to propose solutions to real-world problems. Build coding skills as you take games apart and put them back together again in new ways. Challenge your friends and family to play your game online.

Tuesday, March 25th:  Animated Creations
Learn to use the classic special effects technique of stop-motion to make your own short animation of drawings, objects, or characters. Starting with your own concept, develop a storyboard, photograph the frames, and use software to patch them together into a unique creation that you can take with you.

Wednesday, March 26th:  Colorful Cosmos
Be an astronomer for a day as you use NASA telescopes to take your own images of the Universe. Use real astronomical software to combine images, change brightness and contrast, and add color schemes to find what's hidden in the raw images of the sky. Take your own spectacular, cosmic images with you.

Thursday, March 27th:  Movie Making
Learn what it takes to create a movie. Find your story and your stars, compile and edit your video, add a soundtrack, and of course add your name to the credits. Use iMovie or MovieMaker to put it all together. Develop an understanding of the moviemaking process and export your own masterpiece to DVD.

Friday, March 28th:  Wearable Circuits
These days, computers show up in surprising places: watches, glasses, and even our shoes. Learn how to program Arduino circuits that you can sew into clothing or plush toys. Then, use batteries, LEDs and conductive thread to make colorful creations that you can wear home.
