Special Events for Today

Visit the S101 Submarine , brought to you by the OceanGate Foundation, July 28-August 12!
Visitors to the Miami Science Museum, as well as participants in the Museum’s 2012 Summer Camp: Summer of the Submarine sessions 7 and 8 will have the opportunity to see a real submarine on exhibition at the Museum July 28–Aug. 12. Provided through a partnership with the OceanGate Foundation, the S101 submarine will give visitors and campers a chance to dive into the science of submarines and the forces they encounter while traveling the world’s oceans.

During the Into the Deep Summer Camp classes, campers will discover oceanography, periscopes, Morse code, and the other technologies that allow subs to traverse the seven seas. Students participating in the Museum’s Upward Bound outreach program will also enjoy submarine science as part of their summer program.

The S101 is one of the earliest diesel-electric subs ever constructed. Built in England it has had an interesting history; it’s been tested by the Swedish navy, owned at one point by an environmental group who painted it like an orca to chase whales away from whalers, and then purchased by a private owner who improved its mechanics and dove it 35 times exploring Lake Washington and Puget Sound.
