Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome



AIDS is a condition that slowly destroys the body's immune defense system and makes the body vulnerable to opportunistic infections. AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Acquired = to receive

Immune = the virus directly attacks the immune system

Deficiency = over many years, your immune system will slowly be destroyed by the replication of the virus particles.

Syndrome = the process or pattern of systems.


HIV

Human = attacks only human beings

Immunodeficiency = the body is rendered deficient by the virus

Virus = particles which get inside a host's cells and replicate themselves, causing injury or death to the cells and sometimes to the host.
